Characteristics of olivine
- It is a powerful natural mineral abrasive.
- Operator safety: Its chemical composition contains no free silica (unlike silica sand and black sand), which is why it is recommended for blasting where operators' health is a priority.
- Abrasive: With a hardness between 6.5 and 7.0 on the Mohs scale and a high specific gravity (3.3 gr/cm³), it is suitable for restoring façades in aluminium, polyester, stone, marble and wood, and for producing clean steel surfaces with a medium profile.
- Environment: Using olivine for blasting benefits the environment, as it is a material used as a soil improver, it helps capture carbon dioxide and it restores acidic soils to alkaline. It requires no special measures for disposal as waste, unlike slag, which usually contains hazardous trace metals (lead, arsenic) as well as sulphur and phosphorus.
- Wet blasting abrasive: It is an excellent abrasive for wet blasting, combining high performance with low abrasive consumption.
- Appearance: Its yellow-green colour leaves the site looking pleasant after the job, in contrast to the black of slag.
